Let’s talk about acrylates (also called acrylate copolymers or polyacrylates). Sounds science-y and harmless, right? But these are actually plastic-like chemicals that sneak into makeup, hair stuff, and even skincare. Yikes!
👀 Where Do They Hide?
You’ll often find acrylates in:
Waterproof mascaras
Liquid eyeliners
Nail polish
Hair gels and sprays
Primers and foundation
What Do They Do?
They help make products smooth, sticky, or long-lasting. But guess what? They're not great for your skin or the planet!
⚠️ Why We Say “No Thanks!”
Even though they’re legal to use, here at TPP HQ we’re not big fans- here’s why:
Can irritate sensitive skin or eyes
Not biodegradable – they’re like microplastics!
Sometimes cause allergic reactions
And we definitely don’t want that on our skin, especially if you're still growing!
💖 Miss Sparkles Says: Swap it Out!
Instead of using products with acrylates, look for gentle, natural alternatives made with:
Beeswax or plant-based gums (for hold and texture)
Natural starches in makeup or primers
Brands that say “biodegradable” and “plastic-free” on the label
🌟 Sparklepower Tip:
Check for words like “acrylate copolymer” or “polyacrylate” on the label — if you spot them, it’s a good clue it’s time to move on to a kinder choice.
DIY Natural Fairy-Hair Mis (Hair Spray)!
✨ Why you'll love it:
No alcohol, no artificial fragrance, no sticky chemicals
Adds light hold and shine
Super gentle for sensitive scalps
Made with easy ingredients you have in the cupboard!
🌼 What You’ll Need:
1 cup distilled water (or cooled boiled water ASK A PARENT TO HELP WITH THIS!)
1 tbsp sugar (yes, sugar! It gives light hold - SWEEEEEET!)
1 tsp aloe vera gel (optional for hydration)
1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin (optional helps smooth frizz)
3–5 drops kid-safe essential oil (like lavender or sweet orange)
A clean spray bottle
🧪 How to Make It:
In a bowl or measuring cup, dissolve the sugar in the warm (NOT BOILING OR HOT) water (ask a parent to check the temp for you).
Stir in the aloe vera gel and glycerin if using.
Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil.
Pour the mixture into your spray bottle using a funnel.
Shake well before each use!
Create a Cuuuute label to stick on the bottle!
💇 How to Use:
Lightly mist onto dry or damp hair.
Use your hands or a brush to style as needed.
Great for ponytail flyaways, curls, or refreshing your hair!
🧊 Storage Tip:
Keep it in the fridge and use within 1–2 weeks. Since it’s preservative-free, make small batches and clean your bottle between uses.
🌟 Miss Sparkles Says:
Want more hold? Add a teeny tiny bit more sugar — but don’t go overboard, or it’ll get sticky! Ewwwww!!! This spray is magical for little updos, dance recital hair, or just taming everyday fuzz.
